i'm with you!!
i've tried so hard, but i just keep losin it!
i mean, it's harder to self-teach things, especially languages...
i mean, you don't know if yer pronouncing it right or not!
and elvish is definately something that you don't want to mispronounce...

i was originally trying to learn Quenya, but i was like "oh screw it" and gave up...
but this might help:
they say that elvish just flows off the tongue...
that might help the pronunc.
if it doesn;t flo it doesn't go!

I would love to learn Elvish too! It's a really beautiful language and the fact that most people don't know or speak Elvish makes it even more special Kaitlyn

Isn't elvish based on middle English or something or some other early Anglo-Saxon thing? I still have that article about learning elvish for you Legolas....I keep forgetting to send it.

I know quite a bit, not phrases, but the root forms and a few nouns.. I can desipher a few elvish names and junk. For learning elvish I propose Ruth S. Noels book "the languages of tolkiens middle earth" Not only does it tell you how to write and say the languages, but it also gives you background info on the characters, its really cool.
I am learning Quenya... but basicly I just take all elvish and have it one language, because there are so many words left out... theres no point in haveing two languagues, because theres not enough for a whole one...
One thing that annoys me with Quenya tho, is that its past tence, and imperative tence are the same!!! UGH!!!
so:
I am! = nen
I was = nen
The same suffix for past and imperative (the exclamation point) is the same!! and it is really annoying because I want to say something imperative, but it also could be in the past tence... Sindarin is good with that tho, and I like it because it is more of a hard language, more consenents and is more like dwarvish..
All in all the elvish tounges are very very fun to try and learn, i've looked for web sites and stuff, but the books are much easier to use. very handy.
And about that name generator... it's sorta stupid because it takes the names of the people of middle earth and tells you that that is YOUR name... I prefer putting together my own, such as Barukasea, the Axe Leaf, and others... on my board I have a thread where ppl ask for names that suit them, and I try to come up with some for them, a guy who is like totally into vocabulary i made a name of "Atanevaquetta" - the man of words. I do this for a buncha people on my board... poor Maren, her name is already elvish, it means "Of the dwelling"... Well I think i've said enough for now.... as you might have guessed I don't like short posts. Lol. (I'm a message board freak, this is the 8th board I've been to)

I actually watched a TV show in CA over spring break, and Sindarin is based off an almost extinct language. A small town on the north-east boarder of Sweden (close to Russia) are the only ones left in the world speaking the language that Tolkien based Elvish off.
