to be completely COMPLETELY honest, your opinion is value! i promise. i do agree w/ your opinion on harry potter, but i still like it...but you don't have to. you make your own decisions, and that's great! never let anyone change that, OK?

First off I have a question, and i don't mean to be mean or anything, I'm just wondering:
mersadie: If you are a christian, then hhow come you swear all the time? (Also what type of christianity are u?)
As for me, I am a christian. I have been since i was five, so that means almost 11 years. I have heard peoples opinions on the Lotr and I just can't agree with the people who say its bad. CUz I honestly don't think it is. HOWEVER i don't think its christian either (PLEASE don't hate me you guys!!) From what I've read, JRR Tolkien, wasn't even a christian when he wrote it. And same goes with C.S. Lewis. My dad said that he wasn't even a christian when he wrote most of his books. BUT I could be wrong on that. I'm just saying I don't see anything christian about it.
AS for HP, I think its wrong sure. If you let it get to you., and you become addicted to it and learn every spell in there. But if youy don't then its fine. I've had so many disagreements with my church friends about htis. And to be honest, sure it has witchcraft in it, but for you christians, if yer REALLY a christain, then is shouldn't affect you. Tempt you yes, affect no. As for me, I've read all the books and watched all the movies and i think they are pretty good.
And also, I just can't get why people think Lotr is ok, but not HP, i mean they both have wizards and such so whats the real difference between the two?
Rina
P.S. To anyone who disagrees with me: I'm not trying to be mean!! And if it comes out like that then I apologize! Honestly. I hate being mean and being the one to damper things, but I just watned to post my opinion.

wow! you sure do have a long opinion!
but that's why this board/thread is here; so you can give your opinion.
but i must tell you, that i do see the christian way of the LotR books, but not the movies. the movies weren't supposed to be made into Christian movies, but i can see how the books are Christian, and i do see a christian tint in the movie.
it's all about temptation. the ring is like the devil; the fellowship is like God's deciples. the deciples are just out to rid the world of Satan, and Satan just tries to possess all of them. this was all in one of my pastor's sermons, so yeah. and then the orcs are like all of Satan's demons, and then every other good army is like God's army.
and as for the authors being Christian:
Yes, Tolkien was a Christian when he wrote the books. Actually, he was Catholic, but oh well.
and for Lewis: he was an athiest, but then he did a whole bunch of research and then became a Christian and wrote his books. i do see the Christian view of the Chronicles, though...

Go Rina!!! I totally agree, tolkien's writings didnt have anything to do with Christianity!
I think that Tolkien didn't try to base it on christianity, he made his own religion for his own world. Now, there is an Iluvatar, but Tolkien didn't base this on the Christain God, he just thought that haveing only one God, instead of many (like in the hindu religion) was more plausable for his world. Also to make a good book, you have to have a source of evil. Now most books have a good and an evil, but dont explain it all. Tolkien did. He started at the very begining and made up the entire history of his world. He chose a God, and a source of Evil (Melkor), he didnt base it on ANY EXISTING RELIGION, he made his own, and his made up religion just happend to be more like Christainity, well actually, its more like Judism, because there is no "Son of God".... but the Jews have a Messiah too, it just hasn't come. Now this is where Tolkien separated his made up religion from other exicisting religions such as judism and christianity. He has no messiah. It seems throughout the war of the ring, there is no God, no one does any praying, no one does anything religious! where is Iluvatar in all of this i wonder... well anyways, i dont think it is evil at all because its just a whole made up world, nothing bad in it, just its made up, and in this made up world people can do "Magic"....
now to argue with this magic theory, christians think anything that has "Magic" in it, its evil, which is utterly stupid because they believe in angels! now these angels could be what tolkien represents as the Istari (wizards). and because the Istari are just about the only people who can work magic that great (elfs can too but thats another story...) its just the same as Angels, and miracles. So anyone who thinks LotR is evil because of magic and stuff really needs to get their prioritys strait.
Magic, as explained by Sephiroth in the videogame Final Fantasy VII, says "Magic is what people call what they can't explain" now Tolkien did the same thing, we can't go into middle earth and try to figure out how gandalf uses magic, but niether could tolkien, because in this world, stuff like that can't be explained. neither could it be in the world tolkien crated. He called it magic, meaning that he didnt want to explain it, not that he could of course......
And for the people that didn't want to read all that here's my answer: Its NOT EVIL!

that had nothing to do with it...the actor part. i was just simply stating a fact. i don't care if the actors are christian or not...that's their decision, not mine! And no, if they believe in God but don't write songs about him, they are not Christian. er how is that? i don't understand....
